Old Rex Site
I recently became aware that the state is interested in selling the former Rex Hospital site that currently houses the Employment Securities Commission. This is located on Wade Avenue and Saint Mary's. For those not in Raleigh or familiar with the area, let's just say it is highly desirable location.
For years I have been trying to tell anyone who would listen that this is a site that should be developed by a public/private partnership and include market rate, workforce and affordable elements. The site, i am sure, is costing the state a significant amount to maintain and run. In addition, the building is not meant for office work and thus is highly inefficient. Combine this with the fact that the federal government pays for the majority of the rent costs, you can see a true win win win developing.
I have been emailing friends and neighbors on this topic and have asked that they write to council and the county commissioners. Here is what I suggest they write. If you live in Raleigh, please consider getting engaged on this issue:

I recently became aware that the state is interested in selling the former Rex Hospital site that currently houses the Employment Securities Commission. I think the city should study the ability to be actively involved in its development. I, along with many of my friends and neighbors have become increasingly aware of the lack of affordable housing in our city. While this issue is often discussed as it relates to downtown or southeast Raleigh, this site can enable a broader conversation. The fact that the city does not currently gain any property tax revenue from the site could enable some unique public/private partnerships. I would like to request that council direct the City Manager to study the site, engage the state in preliminary discussions and use the opportunity to develop an innovative contribution to the housing affordability challenges our city faces. The site's desirable location and access to amenities and schools should be open to all citizens.
